The coast guard and police have been placed on full alert following the discovery of a naval drone on the southern coasts of Lefkada.
Specialists from the Ministry of National Defense have undertaken the technical evaluation of the unmanned vessel in order to clarify its origin and possible role.
The incident has caused intense concern, as even the possibility of its connection with military operations in the war in Ukraine or even with attacks against Russian ships is being examined.
It concerns a USV, Unmanned Surface Vehicle, namely a surface vessel without a crew, a technology used internationally mainly for military purposes, surveillance, intelligence gathering, or special operations, but also for advanced scientific research.

According to information, the ministry’s specialists will proceed with a thorough examination of the vessel, aiming at the recovery of data and the identification of evidence that will reveal both its route and its mission.
Among the scenarios under investigation is its possible connection with the war in Ukraine.
The suspicious USV was found by fishermen near Cape Doukato, inside a sea cave.
Eyewitnesses reported that its engine was still operating when they approached it.
It is a black vessel equipped with advanced technological systems, such as antennas, communication domes, and other electronic equipment, a fact that strengthened suspicions of military or operational use.
After immobilizing it, the fishermen managed to tow it to the port of Vasiliki, where it was handed over to the port authorities.
From there, the process of its safe transport and inspection began, while investigations continue in close cooperation with the competent security and defense services.
