French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed concerns during a telephone conversation with other European leaders and with Volodymyr Zelensky that the US might "betray Ukraine and Europe." This is according to the magazine Der Spiegel, citing a transcript of the conversation.
This conversation took place on December 1st and included all the European leaders and Zelensky, following negotiations between the Ukrainian and US delegations in Florida and prior to the trip of special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Russia.
According to the transcript, during the conversation, Macron reportedly stated that there is "a chance that the US will betray Ukraine on territory, without clarity on security guarantees." He also added that he sees a "bigger danger" for Zelensky.
For his part, Merz said that Zelensky must be "very careful in the coming days."
"They are playing games, with both you and us," the German Chancellor declared.
Later, Finnish President Alexander Stubb added that Europe must not leave Zelensky "alone with these guys." NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also agreed with this position.
