With a statement today 5/2, Donald Trump insists on not renewing the nuclear arms control treaty New START with Russia, thus turning the planet into a savage and uncontrolled nuclear arena.
More specifically, Trump believes that a new treaty should be signed and that New START, which was concluded in 2011, should become a thing of the past.
And this is because no one guarantees that the United States and Russia will agree on the terms of a new nuclear agreement, therefore both nuclear arsenals will be able to expand uncontrollably in the interim.
It is noted that the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has warned his American counterpart that the non renewal of New START constitutes a disastrous blunder.
Trump: The United States will not sign New START, we want a new nuclear agreement
As the President of the United States stressed today 5/2, Washington believes that Russia and the United States should not keep certain provisions of the New START Treaty in force, but instead develop a new agreement in this field.
“We must direct our experts to work on a new, improved and modernized treaty that will endure into the future, rather than extending the New START Treaty, an agreement that was poorly negotiated by the United States and which, moreover, is being seriously violated,” the American leader argued on his page on Truth Social.
White House: Our plan is negotiations for a new nuclear arms control agreement with Russia
The American administration intends to continue negotiations with Russia to develop a new agreement that will replace New START, announced the White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, during a briefing to journalists.

“President Donald Trump wants our nuclear weapons experts to work on a new, improved and modernized treaty that will last for a very long time. And that is what the United States will continue to discuss with Russia,” Trump’s spokesperson stated.
Medvedev: The nuclear agreement with the United States has ended, now absolute chaos begins, the winter is coming
Moscow and Washington no longer have a nuclear arms control treaty for the first time since 1972, noted yesterday 4/2 the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, in a post with an image on his English language account on X.
“That’s it. For the first time since 1972, Russia and the United States no longer have a treaty limiting strategic nuclear forces,” Medvedev stated.
The former President of Russia noted that the entire era of treaties, from SALT I to START III, has ended, “All of this belongs to the past.”
He clarified that this era of treaties has ended, “All of this belongs to the past.”

It is noted that on 5 February 2026, the Russian American Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms, which was signed by the parties on 8 April 2010, will definitively expire.
Russia: We are no longer bound by the obligations of mutual nuclear control treaties
At the same time, Moscow believes that the parties to the Russian American Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms START are no longer bound by the obligations of the agreement and are free to choose their next steps, as stressed yesterday 4/2 by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“With the current conditions, we proceed from the assumption that the parties to the New START Treaty are no longer bound by any obligations or symmetric statements under the Treaty, including its central provisions, and are fundamentally free to choose their next steps.
At the same time, the Russian Federation intends to act responsibly and prudently, shaping its policy on strategic offensive arms based on a detailed analysis of the military policy of the United States and the overall strategic situation,” the ministry stated.
The United States did not respond to the diplomatic call, Russia takes nuclear countermeasures
Russian diplomacy emphasized that Russia has not yet received an official response from the United States to its proposal to adhere to the limits of the New START Treaty.
They added that the approach of the United States to Russia’s initiative on New START is erroneous and regrettable.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the Russian Federation remains ready to take “decisive military technical countermeasures to address possible additional threats to national security.”
Trump opened the window of nuclear chaos, the United States will let the START treaty expire, we will sign another
A nuclear alarm has been sounded across the planet in the wake of the statement by Donald Trump, according to which the United States will allow the mutual nuclear arms control treaty New START to expire, without taking any further action to renew it.
The President of the United States suggested that he would allow the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russia to “expire”, seeking instead a broader agreement that could include “some other players”, reported the New York Times on Thursday 8/1.
The New START treaty, which entered into force in 2011, limits each side’s deployed strategic nuclear warheads to 1.550 and sets a cap of 700 on deployed delivery systems, including missiles, bombers, and submarines.
The pact is set to expire on 5 February.
Two nuclear superpowers with no brakes at all
“If it expires, it expires,” Donald Trump told the newspaper in an interview he gave on Wednesday 7/1, indicating that he would reject Moscow’s proposal to keep the treaty limits in force.
“We will simply make a better deal,” Donald Trump said.
“We probably want to involve some other players as well,” the American president clarified.
The expiration of the treaty would leave the United States and Russia, the two largest nuclear powers in the world, without binding limits on their nuclear arsenals for the first time in about half a century.
It is noted that the START treaty was originally set to last 10 years.
In 2021, the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the then President of the United States, Joe Biden, agreed to extend the pact for five years, the last extension permitted under its terms.
Vladimir Putin is reported to have proposed in September that Russia could voluntarily continue to observe the treaty if the United States were willing to do the same.
Putin had given the United States a one year deadline to comply with the START treaty, after that nuclear chaos
It is noted that on 22 September 2025, the Russian president Vladimir Putin delivered an urgent address, giving the United States a deadline of one year to comply with the agreements on mutual nuclear alignment, while, as he stressed, otherwise Russia would definitively withdraw from its own related commitments.
In simple terms, Russia is ready to continue observing the central restrictions of the New START treaty for one year after 5 February 2026, and after that chaos will come.
According to what he stated, Russia gives the United States a deadline of one year, and this, as he emphasized, constitutes a “necessary step.”
Putin opened the meeting with the permanent members of the Security Council of the Russian Federation with the following words:
“I would like to begin with an issue of exceptional importance for ensuring our national interests and the sovereignty of Russia, and without exaggeration, for its very existence. I am referring to the situation in the field of strategic stability. Unfortunately, it continues to deteriorate.”
We will respond to every challenge with unprecedented military power
The president emphasized that Russia is ready to respond to any potential threat with military power.
“Today is the time to end the moratorium on the deployment of intermediate and shorter range missiles,” he stated, clarifying however that this constitutes a “necessary step.”
“Russia has no interest in an arms race,” he explained.
“The complete abandonment of the New START treaty would be a mistake.”
Putin proposed to the United States the preservation of the regime defined by the New START treaty, stressing three key points:
1) Russia is ready to observe the quantitative limits for one year after the expiration of the treaty.
2) It will do so provided that the United States acts with corresponding measures.
3) The deployment of American weapons in space will be considered by Moscow as a move that undermines strategic stability.
Subsequently, the president proceeded to an explicit statement:
“Russia is ready to continue observing the central quantitative limits of the New START treaty for one year after 5 February 2026. After that, based on an analysis of the situation, we will decide whether or not to maintain these voluntary self restrictions. We believe that this measure will only make sense if the United States acts in the same way and does not take actions that undermine or disrupt the balance of deterrent forces,” Vladimir Putin.
