Bomb from Kim Jong U: He announced an

New factory and a goal of nuclear… "launch" promised by Kim

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected a new facility for the production of military-grade fissile material and declared that Pyongyang plans to "strengthen the state's nuclear forces at an exponential rate." According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Jong Un claimed that the country has more than doubled its production capacity for nuclear material over the last five years and that the new facility will further enhance its deterrent power.

Acceleration of the nuclear program

Kim Jong Un has implemented a five-year plan to strengthen the nuclear arsenal, which began after the failure of denuclearization negotiations with the United States, including three meetings with then-US President Donald Trump during his first term. According to the KCNA, the new facility incorporates "more advanced technology," while photographs show Kim Jong Un touring rows of centrifuges.

International assessments and concerns

The appearance of the new facility comes at a time when the United States is attempting to reach an agreement with Iran to curb its nuclear program. According to a report by the Congressional Research Service, North Korea already possesses enough nuclear material for up to 90 nuclear warheads and is estimated to have assembled approximately 50. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported in March that the country has at least two active uranium enrichment units, at Yongbyon and Kangson, while monitoring the construction of a new building in Yongbyon with features similar to existing facilities.

A signal of transition to "mass production"

Analyst Hong Min, of the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul, assessed that the new facility shows the maturation and expansion of Pyongyang's nuclear program. As he noted, the emphasis seems to be shifting from "research and production" to "mass production and military utilization," with the presence of defense industry officials and the Nuclear Weapons Institute reinforcing this image.

Strengthening nuclear power and missile tests

Along with the development of enrichment facilities, North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests in recent years, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of striking targets anywhere in the United States, according to the annual threat report of US intelligence agencies for 2026. Kim Jong Un praised the country's nuclear scientists for achieving the goals of the five-year plan, characterizing North Korea's nuclear capabilities as "unimaginable."

Regional and global implications

The strengthening of Pyongyang's nuclear program is part of a broader international environment of increasing nuclear power. According to the organization Nuclear Weapons Ban Monitor, the number of available nuclear warheads globally has increased to 9,745, with a total explosive power corresponding to over 135,000 Hiroshima-type bombs. The report states that 2025 was the ninth consecutive year of an increase in active nuclear weapons, with Russia possessing the largest arsenal (over 5,400 warheads) and the United States following with nearly 5,300.
