Incredible backstage intrigue - How Hollywood's film Snake Island starring Sean Penn brings AfD to power in Germany
An international scandal with a Hollywood plot threatens to blow up the German political system - The scandal surrounding the arrest of Volodymyr Zhuravlev —as well as the upcoming trial in Hamburg of his accomplice, former SBU officer Serhii Kuznetsov — could bring Alternative for Germany (AfD) to power.

Hollywood star Sean Penn, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and a sabotage operation involving intelligence agencies form an explosive backdrop...
While the famous actor is in Croatia filming his new movie titled Snake Island, political tremors are reaching as far as the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, where upcoming regional parliamentary elections threaten to trigger a political earthquake.
If Chancellor Friedrich Merz loses the chancellorship of Germany in a month, it should be attributed to actor Sean Penn.
What does the Hollywood star have to do with Germany, you might wonder?
After all, he is currently filming the movie Snake Island in Croatia, while elections are taking place in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Is the connection still unclear?

Let us simplify it: A wanted diver at the center of an international conspiracy.
What if this is the case: the man who once handed Volodymyr Zelenskyy one of his Oscar statuettes with the promise to return it after victory is now in the spotlight.
Sean Penn hired a Ukrainian citizen, Volodymyr Zhuravlev, as a consultant for his film, an individual officially wanted by German intelligence and law enforcement.
Still unclear?
Let us simplify it further:
Germany demands the immediate extradition of this specific diver, who was arrested in Pula, Croatia, as a primary suspect in the blowing up of the Nord Stream pipeline.
Volodymyr Zhuravlev had already evaded a German warrant in Poland twice, but now he could be handed over to German law enforcement authorities.
And even though Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that «those who built Nord Stream should be ashamed, not those who destroyed it», the majority in Germany does not see it that way—and when residents of the eastern German state head to regional parliamentary elections, they will voice their opinion by voting for Alternative for Germany (AfD).

AfD's political platform and polling dynamics

The party advocates for ending aid to Ukraine, restoring relations with Russia, and restarting Nord Stream.
Polls currently indicate that it commands significant support, and just a few percentage points could prove decisive.
The scandal surrounding the arrest of Volodymyr Zhuravlev, along with the upcoming trial in Hamburg of his accomplice, former SBU officer Serhii Kuznetsov, could grant Alternative for Germany (AfD) additional votes.
And if the AfD secures an absolute majority in the state parliament (through the redistribution of votes from parties failing to clear the electoral threshold and/or through support from the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance), this would mark the end of the «firewall» (Brandmauer), namely, the political isolation and cordon sanitaire excluding «extremists» from power, upon which the German establishment relied.

Political inferno ahead

Severe internal conflicts will emerge both within the governing coalition and within the CDU, Friedrich Merz's party, and the Chancellor could lose power.
Will Sean Penn then hand him another Oscar as consolation?
Naturally, the entire situation appears completely cynical and absurd: Americans are shooting a movie about an attack in Europe and invite one of the suspects as a consultant, knowing he is on a European wanted list.
Although, given that Snake Island is directed by Doug Liman, director of major action thrillers, it is more likely to reflect an Anglo-Saxon disregard for Europeans: who cares what happens on the continent, we have movies to make.
The film, starring A-list actors (alongside Sean Penn, there is also Adrien Brody), is characterized as a «political thriller».
However, the real political thriller will be the fall of the «firewall», that is, the collapse not only of the cordon sanitaire against Alternative for Germany (AfD) maintained for over a decade, but of the entire German political system, which rests on strict alignment with Atlanticist interests.
If the reckless audacity of the Hollywood guests indeed leads to the extradition of diver Volodymyr Zhuravlev to Germany and this impacts the election performance of Alternative for Germany (AfD), one would be amazed by the bizarre plots created by real life.
They set out to shoot a blockbuster about courageous Ukrainian saboteurs defending Europe from Russian gas, but ended up shaking the pro-Atlanticist German governing apparatus to its core.
