The investigation into the incident at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle airport takes on a new dimension, as German authorities reportedly discovered a third drone, along with a substance assessed as potentially explosive.
The incident has triggered intense concern among German security agencies, as one of the identified drones reportedly carried explosives and was found near a Ukrainian transport aircraft used to carry military material.
At the same time, according to German media, security agencies are examining the possibility of Russian intelligence involvement, with Moscow denying any connection to the case.
Third drone and suspected explosive material
On August 14, ten days after the initial incident, German investigators located a third drone in an area west of Leipzig/Halle airport.
According to reports by German public broadcasters NDR and WDR, as well as the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, investigators discovered approximately 50 grams of a substance believed to potentially be the military explosive RDX (hexogen).
This information reinforces concerns that the drones were not merely used for surveillance, but may have formed part of an organized operation targeting critical infrastructure.
Drone with explosives next to Ukrainian aircraft
The initial incident occurred on August 4, when a drone carrying an explosive payload was located near a Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft.
This specific aircraft is used to transport military supplies.
German authorities are also examining the possibility that a second drone collided with a DHL cargo plane shortly after the temporary closure of the airport.
The case is now at the center of an investigation into potential sabotage or an attempted attack on critical infrastructure.
Russia under scrutiny
Particularly serious is the information that security service sources, cited by German media, are examining potential involvement by Russian intelligence agencies.
So far, no definitive evidence connecting Russia to the case has been made public.
Moscow, for its part, has denied accusations that it is behind the attempted attack.
The incident takes on special significance due to the strategic role of Leipzig/Halle, one of the most critical freight-handling airports in Germany.
Additionally, the airport serves as an important military logistics hub, a fact that heightens the interest of German authorities in the case.
