Boris Johnson has remained one of the most vocal Western voices in support of Ukraine since the launch of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. With his latest statement, he reiterated the view that Moscow must abandon its pursuit of controlling Kyiv's geopolitical course. The phrase "if you love someone, let them go" is not new to his rhetoric. Johnson had used the same metaphor in an interview in 2025, arguing that Russia must accept that Ukraine and the Baltic states are not part of a modern Russian empire. This time, however, the message was phrased even more directly: Russia, in Johnson's view, must accept Ukraine's independent path.
