Kyriakos Mitsotakis intends to introduce a provision into the dialogue on Constitutional Revision that would prohibit the passing of measures that create deficits in national budgets. Essentially, this would involve additional fiscal rules extending beyond the requirements of the European Stability and Growth Pact. Although the core of the proposal is considered sound, such a provision is viewed as exceptionally difficult to implement and is certain not to be accepted by other political forces.
Furthermore, this provision lacks significant support even within the ranks of the New Democracy (ND) party, as political parties would be forced to abandon promises of large-scale social benefits. In other words, this provision is unlikely to gain traction; it will not secure the 180 votes required for it to be passed later by a simple majority of 151 in the Revisionary Parliament.
